President Nursultan Nazarbayev Opens Monument to Repression Victims in Astana

The participants of the fourth Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions and prominent social figures attended the opening ceremony of the monument. The Monument commemorates the victims of famine in 1932-1933.

At the opening ceremony, the President pointed out that the fourth Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions is being held these days in Astana.

“Nine years ago, during the first Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions Kazakhstan was called a land of peace and accord. Today, on the Day of Victims of Political Repression we remember two tragic dates in the country’s history. This year marks the 80th anniversary of famine and the 75th anniversary of the peak of repressions. The famine struck not only Kazakhstan but also Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. We gathered here to commemorate the memory of the people and open this monument,” the President said.

The sculptural composition of the monument consists of two parts. The key part of the monument is an image of mother. She appeals to heaven feeling despair and hope. She wants to save her precious child. The mother and her child are surrounded by stone statues, which were put on the graves of Kazakh people in ancient times. The “Wall of Sorrow” represents an overturned shanyrak as a symbol of broken human lives and is placed against the background of the monument.

The Monument is located in the old historical part of the city, at the crossroad of Republic and Pobeda Avenues.
